Harmonic dictation

In these exercises, the progressions contain:

  • 7-8 chords
  • diatonic chords
  • only root position triads
Directions:

For each exercise, click the name of the Harmonic Dictation and then listen to the example (as many times as you need).  You may notate the soprano or bass if you want, but concentrate on the chords that are played. Then check your answer by clicking “Check your answer.” Once done, click the name of the exercise again to collapse it.

For each example, you are given a blank staff with the number of chords indicated by blanks under the bass clef staff. You should first determine whether the exercise is in a major or minor key, then which key. Next, figure out the tonic. For this level, there is one chord per beat. Listen for patterns in the chord progression.

Good luck!
